The UKCA (UK Conformity Assessment) mark is the new UK product marking that has come into force for certain products placed on the market in Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland). It covers most products that previously required the CE marking, including windows and doors (EN 14351-1), curtain walling (EN 13830) and aluminium structures (EN 1090).
Although UKCA marking came into force on 1 January 2021, organizations have until 31 December 2021 to apply the new mark.
For products placed on the market in Great Britain after the end of 2021, CE marking will not be recognized* meaning it’s important for manufacturers to act now to remain compliant.
What products does the UKCA mark apply to?
BSI is an approved body (0086) for the UKCA mark and can work with you on the required conformity assessment procedures to allow you to affix the UKCA marking under the following areas:
- Construction Products
- Personal Protective Equipment
- Gas Appliances
- Pressure Equipment
- Measurement Instruments
How can you prepare for UKCA marking?
The steps you need to take to prepare for UKCA marking will depend on the status of your business and your future market access requirements. If your product requires the services of a notified body for third party assessment of conformity, you will need to check whether they are able to offer UKCA marking-related services. Only organizations who are approved bodies for UKCA marking will be able to offer this service.
To ensure you’re fully aware of the requirements and the impact on your business – you can opt to take Market Access (inc CE, UKCA) Training Courses from BSI Training Academy.
After supporting The Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB) in their recent webinar “Marking of Construction Products Post BREXIT”, BSI has held a host of webinars on UKCA which are now available to watch on-demand.
What about CE marking?
It’s important to note that UKCA marking is not recognized in the EU market, so products that are placed on the market in the EU must still have the CE marking affixed.
If your product requires the services of a notified body for third party assessment of conformity, and if this service has been carried out by a former UK notified body, your CE marking will no longer be valid.
To maintain your CE marking you will need to work with a notified body registered in an EU27 member state.
BSI has a notified body based in The Netherlands (2797) and can offer CE marking services for the following Regulations/Directives:
- Construction Products Regulation
- Personal Protective Equipment Regulation
- Gas Appliance Regulation
- Pressure Equipment Directive

* Northern Ireland businesses placing qualifying goods on the GB market (unfettered access) can continue to use the CE Mark when third party conformity assessment is carried out by an EU Notified Body. The CE Mark is applied together with the UKNI mark when conformity assessment is carried out by a UK Body.
